Ron Paul, Extremist

(Op-ed submitted by Ron Cline of Mason City)

It has been interesting to watch the television, internet, and newspaper coverage of Ron Paul’s campaign for president in 2012 so far. The media clearly believe that he is not a “mainstream” candidate, but rather is “extreme” and “marginal”. And you can see why they think this and attenuate his coverage if they do not dismiss him entirely. After all, he is for a non-interventionist foreign policy (”Separated as we are by a world of water from other nations, if we are wise we shall surely avoid being drawn into the labyrinth of their politics and involved in their destructive wars.”), restrained fiscal policy (“No pecuniary consideration is more urgent than the regular redemption and discharge of the public debt; on none can delay be more injurious or an economy of time more valuable.”), and sound money (“A coinage of gold, silver, and copper is a measure which in my opinion is become indispensably necessary.”) Indeed, Dr. Paul holds the views as I have cited them above; however, the quotations which follow are not his, but George Washington’s. Would the media really find George Washington “extreme”, “marginal” and out of the “mainstream”? Would you? Have we come to this, that arguably our greatest leader is now thought to be out of touch with America? Should we abandon the clear running channel of American beliefs defined by Washington or follow today’s leader’s departure into the brackish backwaters of over weaning national power, imperial adventures, and fiscal and monetary fantasy? Why should we not support the man who speaks for our true core outlook, Ron Paul, as against those, both right and left who have perverted it to our harm?
