Kiwanis serving steak at MCHS-Newman baseball game

MASON CITY — To add to the sizzle of a great rivalry, the Mason City Noon Kiwanis Club will be selling steak sandwiches and pork-rib sandwiches at the Mason City High School vs. Newman Catholic High School baseball game on June 26 at the Newman field.

Proceeds will go to the Newman Booster Club.

Kiwanis member Lorris Long, who was a member of the Corwith High School state champion baseball teams of 1958 and 1959, will throw out the first pitch. Members of the Kiwanis Club will lead the crowd in Take Me Out to the Ball Game.

The community-service club celebrated its 90th anniversary with a banquet in December.

“We’ve been looking for a fun way to give back to the community,” said club president Joe Buttweiler. “Many of our members go to this great game each year, so we decided to do something special and have a steak fry.”

“We hope it will also raise awareness about the club and the service it has provided to the community for 90 years,” Buttweiler said. “Mason City is fortunate to have many excellent service clubs with members who are dedicated to improving the community, and especially to helping youngsters.”

The Mason City Noon Kiwanis Club meets at noon Thursdays in the meeting room at Hy-Vee Wine and Spirits, which is next to Hy-Vee West in Mason City. The mission of the club is to help children. The club supports numerous programs each year that help kids in North Iowa, including youth sports programs, Special Olympics, Four Oaks, Al Yad, Salvation Army, Cheer Fund and many others. The group’s main fundraisers are the annual Dad’s Belgian Waffle Day each January and the Travel and Adventure Series at North Iowa Area Community College.

The Mason City-Newman game will begin after the 2 p.m. junior varsity game June 26 at the Newman High School field. Sandwiches will go on sale about 1:30 p.m.

The club is always looking for new members. If you are interested, contact Buttweiler at 641 424-5544.|
