Creative summer camps & classes at MacNider Art Museum

MASON CITY, Iowa – Keep your child’s creativity alive this summer by enrolling him or her in classes and camps at the MacNider Art Museum. With topics that range from papier-m‚chÈ and painting to puppets and jewelry to junk and dinosaurs, there is something for everyone.

Offered June 15 through August 19, the Museum’s camps and classes allow children to have fun, be creative and use their imaginations. Skilled in the class or camp topic, experienced instructors – many of them artists or former teachers – lead each group. With every program, children get to create unique works of art, tour the Museum, and discover their inner artists.

Arts Bugs introduces two to five year-olds to the museum as a friendly place while they explore art materials. A parent or caregiver should accompany each child. Topics are different each time, so sign up for a few sessions or all five. Sessions are on Wednesdays, June 15, 22, 29, and July 13 and 20, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. The cost if $5 per class for the general public and $4.50 per class for Museum Members.

Children ages eight and up will create kites, wind socks, wind chimes and pinwheels at Blowin’ in the Wind Week, from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday through Friday, June 21 to 24. Museum Members pay $29, while the general public pays $32.

On Tuesday, June 28, and Thursday, June 30, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m., kids ages six and up will get messy as they create a zoo from papier-m‚chÈ animals at Papier-M‚chÈ Critters. Critters is $16 for the general public and $14 for Museum Members.

At Terrific T-Shirts, children five and up will make tie-dyed and faux batik t-shirts. Prepare to make a fashion statement on Tuesday, July 5, and Thursday, July 7, from 1:00 to 2:30 p.m. Class participants should bring two plain white cotton t-shirts. The cost is $11 for Museum Members and $12 for the general public.

Got junk? Children five and up can bring it to Junkorama! From 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 9, kids can share and combine unwanted items to make fantastic creations. The class will take place on the front lawn, so junk of all sizes is welcome. Junkorama is $10 for the general public and $9 for Museum Members.

Kids can design unique puppets and have them star in their own special productions at Puppet Camp. On Tuesday, July 12, through Friday, July 15, from 8:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., children six and up will become puppeteers. Camp is $56 for the general public and $50 for Museum Members.

Does your child or grandchild love to try new art materials? Send him or her to Paint? Pencil? Chalk? Charcoal? on Wednesday, July 13, from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. Children ages five and up can explore and experiment with different materials to create one-of-a-kind masterpieces. The cost is $7 for Museum Members and $8 for the general public.

At Sticks and Stones, children five and up will make 3-D art with natural materials from their back yard or vacation. Kids should search for their own supplies and bring them to class on Wednesday, July 20, from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. The general public pays $8, while Museum Members pay $7.

Your kids can’t get enough paint? Send them to Paintathon from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 27. Easels will be set up outside so that children ages five and up can paint to their hearts’ content. Class is $8 for the general public and $7 for Museum Members.

For children that love to work with clay, It’s a Mini-Zoo is the class for them. Using colorful polymer clays, kids ages six and up will create miniature animals from 1:00 to 2:30 p.m., Tuesday, August 2, through Friday, August 5. The cost is $26 for the general public and $23 for Museum Members.

Summer Art Camp takes place Monday, August 8, through Friday, August 12, from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Kids in grades one through six will spend the week making, building, painting, and creating. All sorts of projects will be brought home at the end of the week. This week-long camp costs $58 for Museum Members and $64 for the general public.

The MacNider is fun for young children, too. At Arts Bugs Go To Camp, two to five year-olds will explore different art materials to make all things dinosaur related. A parent or caregiver should accompany each child at Camp, held Tuesday, August 16, through Friday, August 19, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Art Bugs Camp is $20 for the general public and $18 for Museum Members.

Adults can get in on the creativity with Repurposed Jewelry on Saturday, June 25, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. The instructor will show class members how to turn their old jewelry and trinkets into fashionable treasures. The cost is $12 for the general public and $11 for Museum Members.

This summer, family and friends can take a class together: Chairs with Flair. Participants will decorate a chair to be donated to NIVC Services. Pick out a chair at Affordables in Mason City or the instructor will have a chair waiting for you at the Museum. Decorating is from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 23, and Saturday, July 30. $5 is required to cover the cost of supplies.
