Harkin Announces $750,000 for Employment Training in Iowa

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA), today announced that the Des Moines Area Community College and the Milton S. Eisenhower Foundation will receive a total of $750,000 from the Department of Labor’s (DOL) Employment and Training Administration (ETA). |WASHINGTON, D.C. — Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA), today announced that the Des Moines Area Community College and the Milton S. Eisenhower Foundation will receive a total of $750,000 from the Department of Labor’s (DOL) Employment and Training Administration (ETA). The funds will be used to increase employment opportunities for workers in Iowa through additional education and training. Harkin secured these funds as chairman of the Senate appropriations panel that funds employment training initiatives. He is also the chairman of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee.

“Today, in Iowa and elsewhere, workers are facing an increasing risk of unemployment. In order for workers to get back on their feet, job education and training is critical, especially during these tough economic times,” said Harkin. “I am pleased to announce this funding and look forward to the opportunities it will provide.”

Details of the funding are below.

Des Moines Area Community College – $350,000
This project will provide targeted sector training in Health Care, Financial Services and Construction fields for 100 unemployed or underemployed participants. Des Moines Area Community College will coordinate efforts with the local workforce agencies to address the needs of the target population and to accomplish the performance goals.

Milton S. Eisenhower Foundation – $400,000
This project will provide fiber optic cable and photovoltaic panel installation training to 40 disadvantaged youth, young adults and ex-offenders between the ages of 18 and 21 years in Des Moines. In addition to the training, participants will be assisted with GED attainment, job readiness skills and other supportive services such as substance abuse counseling. The Eisenhower Foundation will work with Spectrum Resources, a nonprofit group in Des Moines, to provide the services.|
