The Department of Natural Resources has scheduled a public hearing on May 24th on their proposed dove hunting season. A bill signed into law this year allows them to set a season.

The proposed dove hunting season would start September 1 and last for 70 days. Proposed shooting hours would be from one half hour before sunrise to sunset each day. The daily bag limit would be 15 and possession limit would be 30. The entire state would be open to the hunting season. Hunters will be required to have a plug in their gun that limits them to three shots.

Non-toxic shot requirements will apply on areas currently listed as non-toxic shot only. See DNR’s hunting regulations guide for a complete list of wildlife management areas that require non-toxic shot: http://www.iowadnr.gov/law/files/huntingregs.pdf.

The public hearing will be at 1:00 p.m. in the auditorium on the second floor of the Wallace State Office Building in Des Moines. At the hearing, persons may present their views either orally or in writing.

Any interested person may also make written suggestions or comments before May 24th by writing to Willie Suchy of the DNR Wildlife Bureau at the Wallace State Office Building, 502 E. 9th Street, Des Moines, Iowa 50319; by e-mail at wildlife@dnr.iowa.gov; or by fax at (515) 281-6794. Persons who wish to convey their comments orally may contact the wildlife bureau by telephone at (515) 281-5034 or by visiting the fourth floor of the Wallace State Office Building during regular business hours.
