This is the time in the session when the Legislature hammers out the final details of the state budget and legislation focused on the priorities of Iowans. |From Sen. Amanda Ragan
This is the time in the session when the Legislature hammers out the final details of the state budget and legislation focused on the priorities of Iowans.
I have worked all session to listen to your concerns. I’ve responded by voting for several job creation efforts that will grow Iowa’s small and Main Street businesses, and by consistently supporting the best possible education for all Iowa students.
Unfortunately, the final days of session have brought some gridlock. Rest assured that I remain more focused than ever on the needs of everyday Iowans and helping families recover from the national recession.
The good news is that despite what the media may report, our state finances continue to improve. State revenues are up 4.4 percent for past 12 months. Our reserve funds are full at $600 million, and we will add another $300 million by the end of the fiscal year. We must keep the momentum of Iowa’s recovery going by investing in education, job creation and small business growth.
We have passed a bipartisan economic development package that will create jobs and support our small businesses. We have voted to invest in student achievement by modestly increasing funding to help local schools cover the rising cost of expenses. Further we have approved efforts to expand Iowa’s middle class.
With so many issues still unresolved, your input is more important than ever. Please contact me, your representative in the Iowa House and the Governor.
