General Notes:
There have been questions about why a whole street must be shut down while sidewalks are being installed. If you have noted the work taking place between State and 1st Street along Federal, you will see that besides the sidewalk paving, there is concrete work in the middle of the street and along curbs to complete the storm inlets and manholes. As the temporary asphalt sidewalks are removed, dump trucks are needed in the street. Construction equipment is required for various aspects of the sidewalk work and cement trucks will come and go as needed. We will typically see 2-3 different contractors in the street at the same time with their various trucks and equipment working on each block as sidewalks are paved, the street finished, piers built and lighting installed. Landscaping will eventually follow. Shutting down the street is necessary to keep everyone safe and allow room to finish the work…so Federal Avenue can be reopened as quickly as possible! Thank you for your continued patience.

Marty Walsh, the new Main Street Mason City Executive Director, is on the job and part of our team to keep you informed. We welcome him and urge you to use MSMC as your downtown resource and representative.

If utility service interruptions occur due to a line break during construction, as example, we will do our best to make personal and/or email notice ASAP that service will be temporarily interrupted until repairs can be made. We apologize for this inconvenience.

Again, all work start dates are ‘weather permitting’.

Week of April 18

McKiness
Work will continue on water service line connections between 2nd and 3rd Streets. McKiness will coordinate with individual businesses as temporary water shutoffs are needed.

Work should begin in the plaza to replace an 18” storm sewer that runs east-west across the plaza. No business interruptions are anticipated. As the plaza area becomes available (Park Inn Hotel work out of the way), the temporary asphalt sidewalks will be removed in preparation for plaza paving.

If paving work cannot begin in the plaza, sidewalk work will move to the block between 1st and 2nd Streets and the street will be closed to traffic. The intersections at 1st and 2nd Streets will remain open.

Work should begin in State Street, north of the Park Inn Hotel, to replace the water main.

Wicks
Concrete paving will follow the prep work completed by McKiness, working both
sides of the street.

Work will continue on the masonry piers.

P.S. Vision Iowa has granted our community projects an extension until October 31 (so we don’t have to return and ask again), BUT the completion goal for the streetscape remains August, weather permitting.|
