Mason City police officer foils gas theft

At about 2:40 AM Tuesday morning, an officer on patrol noticed a gas can and hose connected to a van parked in the 500 block of South President Avenue. The officer parked his squad car and walked back to the area to investigate. A truck leaving the area was stopped and the same gas can and hose were found to be inside. The driver of the truck, Dennis Eugene Hennick, 47, of Floyd, Iowa admitted to the officer that he had intended o take fuel from the van.

The fuel can that Hennick had 9n his truck was empty at the time of the traffic stop and the owner of the van was unable to come to the scene at that time. Hennick was cited for tampering with a motor vehicle, a simple misdemeanor, and released. The department will follow up with the owner of the van to determine if any additional charges are necessary. |
