An update from the Capitol, from Rep. Sharon Steckman

A few hours ago 0 growth for K-12 education passed out of the Education Committee. It passed on party lines. I serve on that committee. Our financial house is in order, there is no reason for these drastic measures against the education of our young people. I have attached a statement from the Democratic Ranking Member of that committee.

STATEMENT BY REP. NATE WILLEMS (D-Lisbon), RANKING MEMBER OF THE HOUSE EDUCATION COMMITTEE

Zero Percent Allowable Growth for schools was approved by the House Education Committee on a party line vote this afternoon

“House Republicans today chose to leave our kids with nothing while at the same time providing $200 million in tax breaks for the wealthiest corporations in Iowa. Never before have our schools seen zero growth. The Republican plan will raise property taxes by $70 million, increase class sizes, and make it more difficult for rural schools to avoid consolidation.”
