Failure to yield to emergency vehicles at house fire results in arrest

On 01/09/11at 15:58 the Mason City Fire and Police Departments responded to a house fire at the residence of 818 S. Virginia Ave Mason City, IA. While the scene was secured by police and fire personnel, Cindy Hartema, 48 years old of Mason City, failed to yield to emergency vehicles and entered the scene. Hartema drove her Dodge Neon over a fire hose and struck a Mason City Fire Department ambulance. The ambulance and fire hose were damaged from the incident. However, no fire or police personnel were injured from the incident.

An investigation into the incident indicated that Hartema was not impaired while operating her motor vehicle. Hartema was arrested and transported to the Cerro Gordo County Jail on the charges of No Driver’s License, Failure to Have Proof of Insurance, Following too Close to a Fire Truck, Driving over a Fire Hose, and Striking Fixtures upon Roadway/Highway. Hartema posted bond on the charges while at the jail and was released to appear in court at a later date for the charges.
