Alleged theft of generator may have led to house fire

MASON CITY – Last Thursday, September 8th, the Mason City Fire Department responded at 4:15 a.m. to a house fire at 717 South Jersey Avenue. Fire detectors alerted the residents of the danger and Angela DiMarco along with her two children were able to escape the home. A fourth resident of the house, Rory Buchite, did not appear to be home at the time.

About an hour after the fire started Mason City Police on the scene of the fire were dispatched to the 500 block of South Louisiana Ave. in Mason City, regarding the alleged theft of a generator from a work truck overnight. Fire officials determined the cause of the fire at 717 South Jersey Ave was caused by a generator stored in the kitchen that had leaked gas causing a pilot light to ignite.

Upon further law enforcement investigation the generator stored inside the kitchen that caused the fire was determined to be the one stolen from the work truck. Rory Buchite was arrested and taken to Cerro Gordo County Jail around 11:30 a.m. Monday September 12th. Buchite is charged with theft in the 4th degree ($200.00 to $500.00), a serious misdemeanor.

Rory Buchite had been out on a $30,000 bond for two felony counts of delivery of methamphetamine and an additional two counts of delivery of marijuana following the arrest of 15 individuals by the North Iowa Drug Task Force on July 28th. Buchite has pled not guilty and is scheduled for trial in those two indictments in Cerro Gordo County District Court on Oct 18th, 2011 at 1:30 p.m.
