MASON CITY – A north end neighborhood in Mason City is on edge after a gun was fired, neighbors said Friday evening.
Mason City police officers were in the area of 9th Street NW and 10th Street NW and North Federal Avenue after a report of at least one shot being fired Friday at about 5 PM.
Neighbors in the 000 block of 9th Street NW said that “one shot” was fired by a “kid” who they later said was 22 years old.
“He was after another kid,” they women said after police had questioned them. The other “kid” turned out to be in his 20’s, too, they said. “The one guy is after the other guy. We just came out to see what was going on and then some things were said.” Police could be over heard asking the women to “take it easy” as words had been exchanged between them and another group of people standing across the street.
Police were parked in squad cars throughout the neighborhood, with two in the parking lot at 938 North Federal. One person told NIT that “Lots of squad cars, police officers with rifles, helmets at north end of MC; 10th Street and Federal.” Police could be seen on a porch talking to other residents along Federal Ave.
The women at the 000 block of 9th Street NW said that things could get worse this evening, as “the guy with the gun has been drinking.”
For all you folks who don’t know already he was released on ROR Friday by one of the judges up for retention vote this week.
Has anyone noticed that the West side of town is so much more crime ridden than the East side of town? According to Crimereports.com (link can be found on the Mason City Government website)… there were 74 violent crimes on the East side of town (burglaries, theft, drugs,sexual offenses, assault, etc.) While on the West side of town, there were 123 offenses. It’s all there for those who care to look it up. East side, pat your self on the back as you are sooo much better than the rest of the world! You really have it goin’ on!
That damn West Side, we should just bulldoze it over! Bunch of losers! Oh, wait… if we bulldoze the west side, there are some valuable people who live there who are doctors, lawyers, bank presidents, business owners. Pebble Creek and Briarstone would be a total loss even though their side of town is responsible for 62% of the crime in Mason City. Maybe we should stop saying our toast is buttered on the right side, and take a look at the real problems here. I am so flippin amazed at how opinionated some of you armchair warriors are who love to post, yet refuse to help when it is needed!
Yup! Nothing else to say, huh. And once again when I call out all the bashers against the northend… the discussion dies.
The North End SUCKS and so does everyone in it. You just might be the captain of that suck ship. I hope it hits an iceberg. It already hit the shitberg.

A lot of the problems are in the center section of Mason City. They have turned those fine old houses into low rent apartments and they don’t care who the rent to. It is downright scary to go through there at night. North Federal is getting to be the same way. You fell like you are taking your life into the wronng hands every time you drive through there. If these idiots are firing off guns I have to believe they are not good shots and anyone passing by can be hit.
@LVS After having read several of your posts, you’d have me believing that the Northend and downtown Mason City is a breeding ground for big city ghetto gangs with gunfire whizzing past me as I try to make it to Fareway to buy a gallon of milk. You must live in a different reality than I do as I live on the Northside and rarely “fell like you are taking your life into the wronng hands…anyone passing by can be hit” (quoted from LVS including misspelling)
Well on south Monroe i hear the at lest 2 or 3 times a week. kids ask me daddy what’s that loud bang i tell him its fireworks or the train. need to move ….
I live on the “North End” my parents do too..Yes there has been many things have happened on the “north end” but what everyone is failing to look at it is it happens all over Mason City. The armed robbery/burglery happened this last week on the SE part of town. I believe we all as citizens need to stand up and say enough. Start parenting our kids you can tell them “NO”… Beleive or not they will be stronger for it! I do not want to read another bulldoze the northend comment again..That is just ignorance and fear talking get up from your computer and make a difference..Otherwards your just as bad as they are..destroyng public property..Think about it.

I like how everyone is refering to the 2 boys as idiots when in fact there was a boy on his way home FROM WORK and ONE 22 year old boy who had been drinking and firing shots. NOT TWO. That one boy IS the ONLY idiot. He is now in jail, and thats a good place for him it sounds like. The boy he was shooting at is a good guy who works hard and doesnt cause problems. Guns do NOT solve problems, nor does drinking. when sitting in jail I really hope the shooter sees that he needs to Grow up, get some self respect, and start practiciong the self control he clearly lacks. I would assume that the MCPD will take the gun away from this irresponsible boy, if it wasnt stolen anyway.

Really, I wish we could erradicate your problem up there. The few pieces of shit you have up there are ruining it for everyone. It used to be a great part of town years ago. Sucks really.

@Matt-I have lived up here in the North End for a long time and know how to keep my head down. I am also armed and could be dangerous if pushed Years ago it was a lot worse here in the noth end when we had the gangs running everything here. I used to clean my guns on the front porch so they could see me. I don’t like the way things are going here. What used to be decent family homes are now all HUD reantals and are being taken over by people who seem to have no income. At least they damn sure don’t hev jobs. And of course we have the drug house up here on North Jefferson where they are running drugs out of the garage. We see it, why don’t the police?

Matt, there were 3 cars next to my house ( that is my fence in your larger picture ) they were in my back yard and behind my garage with shotguns and riot gear. There were 4 more in the alley right behind the house they went to. One thing is for sure we are really getting tired of this type of thing going on here. It wasn’t like this 15 years ago when I bought my house but now that it is like this I sure as h*** can’t sell it. The landlords around here need to screen there tenants a lot better than they have been.
LJ. the way the laws are now, you don’t know who you are really renting to. Remember you can’t rent to whom you want to, its what the law dictates. After your place has been trashed, does the law help you financially fix it up? NO! I wouldn’t be a landlord for any amount of money.
Some of them landlords around that area are what some would call “Slumlords”. Since half the time they buy houses and make them into crap and get horrible tenants. I lived near one.
