Opinion: Greed of “super rich” trumps working class in Iowa

Politicians in Iowa are to be working on the behalf of the hard working middle class, not on the behalf of the super-rich.  Once again, the greed of the super-rich trumps the working class of Iowa.

I was unaware giving huge commercial and industrial tax cuts to the super-rich in 2013 was in the best interests of hard working Iowans.  The Legislature explained commercial values would exceed the tax cuts and therefore the tax cuts would not cost local governments any monies.  Plus industries would relocate to Iowa due to the tax cuts. Trickle down did not work then and does not work now.

Today the State of Iowa is broke.  The Legislature has proposed balancing the budget by cutting funding for two state universities, thus having students pay for the state’s mismanagement by raising tuition once again.

The Second Phase of this balancing act is to take away the promised backfill from the commercial tax cuts of 2013 and thus have the property tax payers of school districts, cities and counties pay more in property taxes so the super-rich can enjoy their excessive tax cuts.  How many of you hard working Iowans are willing to pay more in property taxes so the super-rich can enhance their bottom financial line?

Maintaining or increasing taxes on the super-rich should be an option, a very real option.  Willie Horton, when asked why he robbed banks, explained “that is where the money is”.

We need to ask ourselves, “Why is the wealth of the super-rich off limits, while the limited monies of the working class come to the forefront?”  Why shouldn’t the super-rich be asked to pay their fair share? Demand an answer from your State of Iowa Legislator.

The working class of Iowa has been deceived for years, we have been told tax cuts will benefit the working class when in reality, the vast majority of benefits go to those who already have the most.  Laws continue to be passed that only benefit the super-rich. The greedy rich are not content with receiving more than their fair share, they are now demanding it all.

Pay close attention to the legislation jammed through the Iowa Legislature in the coming days.  Note how the super-rich receives undue benefits and how the hard working middle class is taken advantage of one more time.    Note how corporations are receiving huge tax breaks one more time. We have the best legislature money can buy.

Let’s get real, we, the working class, do not have the money to buy our legislation. We do have one thing in our favor, the power of the ballot box, the vote this November.  Remember the legislation now being passed that benefits the super-rich over the working class. Be sure to exercise the one power we still possess, the ballot box, our right to vote them out of office.
