LOS ANGELES – Two former Mason City Mohawk basketball stars squared off in the NCAA women’s Division I basketball tournament Saturday as Myah Mellman’s Creighton Blue Jays defeated Mackenzie Meyer’s Iowa Hawkeyes.
The final score was #11 seed Creighton 76, and #6 seed Iowa 70.
Iowa ended its season with a 24-8 overall record. Creighton (19-12) advances to the second round to play #3 seed UCLA Monday night at 8 PM.
Mellman played for Mason City High School until 2014 and was a 2-time team captain and all-conference player. She was a starter in Saturday’s game and played 14 minutes, scoring 0 points with 2 rebounds.
Meyer played 34 minutes in the game and scored 7 points. She had 3 turnovers, 2 rebounds and 3 assists.
All-American Hawkeye Junior Megan Gustafson registered her 28th double-double of the season with 29 points and 17 rebounds.
Jaylyn Agnew led Creighton with 24 points.
Creighton led by 3 at halftime and kept Iowa in comeback mode with superior play. They also led 56-50 as the fourth quarter began and Iowa was never able to get the stops and scores it needed to close the gap.
