The Long Road To Becoming The Best State In The US

Native Americans have lived in the region that is now Iowa for more than 13,000 years, with just a few European traders among them. The arrival of the Europeans had a profound effect on the native Indians, as one unwelcome thing they brought with them was the disease that the Indians had no immunity to. Iowa did not become part of the United States until 1803, and the government only got total political control in 1812. Iowa did not obtain statehood until 1846.

The building of the railways in the 1850’s and 1860’s helped to transform the state into a farming powerhouse. For many years, the food grown on farms in Iowa was transported across the nation, small family farms being the backbone of this trade. Mechanisation in the late 19th and early 20th centuries changed this, with much larger farms being the result.

Early Euro-American Settlers

The first Euro-American settlers in Iowa were French, and at that time, the land came under the jurisdiction of France. There were not huge numbers of them as they soon discovered that the land was primarily a prairie or tall grass region. The settlers that moved to North Iowa built residencies known as sod houses. These proved cheap to built and provided good insulation, keeping them warm in the winter and cool in the summer. In 1836, the first census showed a population of 10,531 inhabitants in the whole state. By 1840 this had risen to 42,112, and by 1850 to 192,214.

The Effects Of War

In wartime, the farms prospered as they were encouraged to be patriotic and grow more to feed the nation. They also received subsidies to help them do this, which were terminated when the wars ended. This caused some farmers severe financial problems, which they got no help with until the Agricultural Adjustment Act was passed in 1933.

Since World War II, Iowa has undergone many changes in politics, social issues, and its economy. It has experienced a gradual growth in manufacturing and service industries, although food production is still a very important part of its economy.

As with the rest of the nation, there has also been a large number of online businesses starting up as well. Among these is news sites that help people keep in touch with the world around them, lighthousenewsdaily.com being just one example.

Made It!

After all its trials and tribulations, Iowa has just been named The Best State In the Union by the US News & World Report. This is not an easy achievement to win, as all 50 states are evaluated across 77 metrics. In most of them, Iowa had improved. In economy, for example, the state had moved up 13 places and in infrastructure, 15 places.

The governor, Kim Reynolds, attributes much of the success to the hard-working people of Iowa, saying that every one of them has contributed to the success of their community and state. Governor Reynolds also said that winning the award was an honor to celebrate, but that work would continue to build a better Iowa.

Lest we forget that the Native Americans (not really native to America but to Asia) came 13,000 years ago and disrupted the lives of all the animals that lived peacefully before they arrived. Needless killing of the buffalo and other animals to support this non-native animal that had taken over the natural balance of this eco-system. Not to mention the wars, killing, raping, and pillaging that happened amongst the tribes. Yet nobody is upset about that.

Good thing they didn’t name their rain dance group the “beavers” or “muskrats” as those animals would have complained that they were being made fun of and were being showed no respect to the history of the beavers and muskrats and would have to pay to get permission to use those names.

Do they even teach this history in school anymore. Probably not, because a lot of it was a lie. Like the fact that Buffalo Bill Cody was a great man, Indian scout for the US government. He was sent out to kill as many buffalo as he could to starve the Indians, which helped the government force them onto reservations.

One tribe move in and another one is wiped out. The story is as old as man. The only thing new is that these days takeover is accomplished not through genocide but outbreeding
