Police seek clues after driver flees traffic stop and then disappears

MASON CITY – Police in Mason City continue to investigate an incident last week in which a driver fled from a traffic stop at a high rate of speed and later abandoned the vehicle.

According to Chief of police Jeff Brinkley, third detail officers initiated a pursuit of a vehicle on Tuesday, January 9 at 6:18 AM after discovering that the vehicle did not match license plate information. The suspect slowed to pull over and then accelerated away in an attempt to flee from officers; the driver may have accelerated to speeds of 90 miles per hour during the ensuing chase. The pursuit went northbound on Federal from 16th Street SE. Then it went mostly east on Highway 122 and north on California Avenue. Officers continued the pursuit west on B-20 and terminated it after losing sight of the vehicle. Officers found the vehicle, a Volkswagen Passat, on North Carolina Avenue a short time later and it had been abandoned. The plates on the vehicle may actually belong on a white pickup truck.

Chief Brinkley says the investigation is continuing to identify the driver. Anyone with information about the case is asked to call the Mason City Police Department at 641-421-3636.
