Man in custody after shooting at police and others at Iowa rest stop and gas station on New Year’s Day

DES MOINES – An arrest has been made after a man opened fire New Year’s Day at an Iowa rest area and then a gas station.

Iowa State Patrol Troopers and local law enforcement officers responded to a 911 call of “shots fired” along Interstate I-80 East of the 265 mile marker at the rest area on January 1, 2018. The suspect then drove west bound and exited at the 265 exit where he fired more rounds at motorists at the BP gas station. Troopers encountered the suspect on County RD X46 where they engaged him and exchanged gunfire. After a brief stand-off Troopers/Officers were able to take the suspect into custody. No injuries were sustained by the suspect or law enforcement.

The Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) is investigating as a result of officers involved in shooting. The Officers involved and the suspect’s name were not released at the time.

Today, the suspect in the Atalissa shooting incident has been identified as Charles Johnston, age 60. He was taken into custody and is currently being held in the Cedar County Jail. Johnston is currently being charged as follows:

– Iowa Code 707.11 Attempted Murder (Class B Felony)

– Iowa Code 708.3A (1) Assault on a Peace Officer with a Dangerous Weapon (Class D Felony)

No injuries were sustained by the suspect or law enforcement.

Members of the Iowa State Patrol, Iowa Division of Narcotics Enforcement, Cedar County Sherriff’s Office, Scott County Sherriff’s Office, Muscatine County Sheriff’s Office, West Branch Police Department, West Liberty Police Department, Department of Transportation and Emergency Medical Services assisted in this incident.

The Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) is continuing to work the investigation.

The names of Officers involved will not be released until the Officers are interviewed by the DCI.
