Why You Should Consider Iowa as a Base for Your Tech Company

The Iowan economy is perhaps best known for its agricultural output, and this remains a key part of the Midwestern economy. However, there is a lot more going on in the state than many people realize. The Iowa tech start-up scene is thriving, and the state is home to an ever-growing list of exciting new tech companies.

Silicon Prairie

The technology sector in Iowa accounts for some 8.8% of the state’s GDP, which is equivalent to $11 billion. In fact, the entire Midwest region is rapidly gaining a reputation as a hotbed for new tech start-ups and has even been dubbed ‘The Silicon Prairie’, a reference to California’s own Silicon Valley. The technology scene in the Midwest is quite different from that in California, but both regions are proving themselves to be prime real estate for new tech start-ups looking for the best possible start.

Other Midwestern states which are showing great promise include Minnesota, which has 136,000 individuals employed in its technology sector. Kansas is another popular destination, with Wichita boasting the third most advanced industries workers in the United States. And finally, Denver in Colorado is ranked at number five in the nation for start-up activity.

Out of San Francisco

There is a seemingly widespread assumption that outside of San Francisco there is a lack of programming talent, as well as other skills which are integral to the survival of the tech industry. In fact, there are a number of reasons that new start-ups would do well to consider a home far away from Silicon Valley. For one thing, the cost of living in and around Silicon Valley has skyrocketed in recent years, rivalling the costs of living in New York City.

High costs of living can make things difficult for both individuals and businesses, especially those who are just starting up and might struggle initially to pay their employees the kind of salary they require to live comfortably in the local region. The Banner Herald has run a number of stories recently which demonstrate the spread of tech companies beyond California.

Working Remotely

Many founders of new start-ups are laboring under the illusion that if their main customer base and partner companies are based in Silicon Valley, then they must be too. In fact, it is now easier than ever for businesses to work closely with one another while separated by great distances geographically. Business communications went digital some time ago and so instantaneous communications over considerable distances are now the standard.

Equally, the spread of talent is now far greater than it used to be. All the talent when it came to programming and software engineering used to be focused around the Silicon Valley area, now however, the talent is evenly spread across the United States and it’s just as easy to hire talented programmers in Iowa as it is in California.

Iowa is rapidly gaining a reputation as one of the best locations in the United States for new tech start-ups. It offers affordable costs of living, and exists in a region that has proven to be fertile ground for new tech start-ups.
