Women’s basketball: Hawkeyes top Cyclones, 61-55

AMES – Iowa State (3-5, 0-0 Big 12) fell to Iowa (8-1, 0-0 Big Ten) by a score of 61-55 on Wednesday night at Hilton Coliseum. The Cyclones were plagued by a cold shooting performance, as they were just 18-of-61 (29.5 percent) from the field, including 7-of-26 from beyond the arc.

Iowa State was led by junior Bridget Carleton, who poured in 17 points, including an 11-of-12 performance from the free throw line. Adriana Camber scored 11 points, followed by a career-high 10 from Bride Kennedy-Hopoate. Carleton also dished out a career-high six assists.

The Cyclones struggled to get into any offensive rhythm in the first half, and found themselves trailing 26-19 at the break after scoring just three points in the second quarter. Iowa State was 1-of-13 from the field in the second stanza, with its only points coming on an and-1 converted by Kennedy-Hopoate.

In total, the Cyclones shot 25 percent (8-32) from the field in the first half, but forced the Hawkeyes into nine turnovers to limit the Iowa offense. Kennedy-Hopoate led the Cyclones with eight points and pulled down three rebounds in the first half.

The shots started fall after the halftime intermission, as the Cyclones charged back and briefly tied the game at 38-38 on a layup in transition by senior Emily Durr. Camber, a sophomore, was critical during the Cyclone rally, knocking down a pair of 3-pointers to help erase an 11-point deficit. Iowa held a 41-38 lead after three quarters.

A back-and-forth final quarter ensued, with Carleton and Durr leading the charge for the Cyclones. Iowa State closed the deficit to just one on multiple occasions in the final minute, including on a pair of Carleton free throws with 28 seconds remaining. However, ISU was never able to pull even in the final stanza, and Iowa was able to ice the game at the free throw line to pull away 61-55.
