Two spills in Eastern Iowa bring out Iowa DNT to investigate

DAVENPORT – The DNR responded to a report of a fuel spill near the boat ramp on the east side of Credit Island in Davenport Friday afternoon.

Davenport environmental inspectors traced the substance to an old storm drain north of the island on the city’s side. The spill is in the main channel of the Mississippi River.

City staff have placed booms to hold the material in place until clean up can begin. It’s unknown how long or how much of the material has leaked to the river.

DNR will work with city staff Monday to determine the pollutant source and continue the cleanup.

Meanwhile, the Iowa DNR responded to the scene of an accident south of Crawfordsville, after a semi went into the East Fork of Crooked Creek near Highway 218.

After first responders worked to help the driver and deal with dead and injured cattle, DNR worked with the trucking company to ensure diesel fuel is removed from the creek.

The leaked fuel came from the fuel tanks on the semi and pooled behind a beaver dam on the creek.

DNR will monitor the fuel cleanup.

County, city and state emergency staff responded to the accident.
