IOWA CITY – An Iowa man who turned in to police a computer with video recorded on it of his roommate beating his cat into blindness has been sent to prison after cops discovered his own sex abuse crimes he recorded on the same device.
In a highly-publicized case of animal torture, 26-year-old Nathan Schloss, formerly of Iowa City, turned in his roommate in 2014 for beating his cat, “Fritz” until it was blind in one eye. Later, in December of 2014, Schloss himself was arrested and charged with 18 counts of sexual abuse after police saw videos of his acts on the computer he turned in as evidence in the cat torture case. Schloss submitted to police a video of his roommate, Leo Nopoulos, beating 8-week-old Fritz, who lost vision in one eye due to the abuse. Nopoulos was later guilty of animal torture, while Schloss was charged with 22 counts of invasion of privacy and 18 counts of third-degree sexual abuse after police saw video evidence on his computer of him sexually abusing an intoxicated woman.
After a lengthy court process, Schloss this week was finally guilty of five counts of invasion of privacy and felony D assault causing serious injury. He was sentenced to up to 10 years in prison.
