Clear Lake man sent to prison for running down bicyclist

MASON CITY – A Clear Lake man who police say was under the influence of drugs when he ran down a bicyclist has been sent to prison for up to 5 years.

On November 10, 2016, Nicholas Dustin Horst, age 36 of Clear Lake, was arrested on charges of Willful Injury (Class C Felony) and Serious Injury by Vehicle (Class D Felony). Horst was the driver of a 2016 Hyundai Veloster that struck a bicyclist in Clear Lake in the 2200 block of Main Avenue on September 27, 2016. Horst is alleged to have driven his car under the influence of drugs, intentionally striking the bicyclist causing serious injury. The Iowa State Patrol assisted the Clear Lake Police Department in the investigation that led to Horst’s arrest.

Today, after an earlier guilty plea to serious injury by vehicle, Horst was sentenced to spend up to 5 years in a state prison, given a suspended 5-year fine, and ordered to pay $240.00 in court fees. He is now in the county jail, awaiting transport to prison.
