BURLINGTON, IOWA – An Iowa woman died as a result of a train collision caused by her car getting hung up on rail tracks.
The accident took place Saturday morning, May 20, at about 3:35 AM at a railroad crossing in Des Moines county. Elisabeth Louise Ferneau, age 24 of Burlington, was driving her 2008 Chevy Impala at a rail crossing on 145th Street when the car dropped off the rail crossing to the west and became hung up on the tracks. An eastbound BNSF train struck the Impala at the crossing. As a result, the Impala came to rest on its side on the railroad tracks west of the crossing. Ferneau died at the scene and was transported away by a funeral home.
The accident remains under investigation.
