Republican Senators stress economic benefits of NAFTA to new U.S. Trade Rep

Lighthizer

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Republican U.S. Senators from Iowa Joni Ernst and Charles Grassley today joined a letter along with several GOP Senate colleagues to U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer stressing the positive economic impacts of NAFTA as the administration considers taking a fresh look at the agreement.

U.S. Sens. Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.), Deb Fischer (R-Neb.), John Cornyn (R-Tex.), James Lankford (R-Okla.), Jerry Moran (R-Kan.), Roy Blunt (R-Mo.), Ron Johnson (R-Wis.), John Thune (R-S.D.), John Boozman (R-Ark.), Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), Ted Cruz (R-Tex.), Pat Toomey (R-Pa.), Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.), James Inhofe (R-Okla.), Mike Rounds (R-S.D.), Johnny Isakson (R-Ga.), and Pat Roberts (R-Kan.) also signed the letter.

Charles Grassley

“Given that the agreement is more than two decades old, there are areas in which NAFTA will benefit from strengthening and modernization. On the other hand, efforts to abandon the agreement or impose unnecessary restrictions on trade with our North American partners will have devastating economic consequences,” wrote the senators.

The Senators told Lighthizer that, “Among other benefits, NAFTA has led to tremendous growth in U.S. trade with Mexico and Canada, integrated cross-border supply chains that benefit U.S. employers, and more than tripled U.S. exports of goods (including agricultural and manufactured goods) and services.  Given that the agreement is more than two decades old, there are areas in which NAFTA will benefit from strengthening and modernization.  On the other hand, efforts to abandon the agreement or impose unnecessary restrictions on trade with our North American partners will have devastating economic consequences.”

NAFTA is absolutely the worse thing that has ever happened to the American worker. It only benefits rich corporations who take advantage of cheap labor is other countries. If you ever travel to Monterey in Mexico you will see hundreds of American plants that use to be here in the U.S. The largest employer in Monterey is Catapillar who employees 5,000 Mexicans at American worker expense.

SPIN – falsehoods and lies – think not? Go to your city council meeting – Gest worse as you move up the ladder in government – Money talks and the more you bribe them the better liars they become.

Corporate bullshit – nafta hurt America and its workers very hard – This nafta is a shafta for the American worker.
