ISU’s Luque takes triple jump title at Big 12 Outdoor Track Championships

LAWRENCE, Kansas – Iowa State’s Jhoanmy Luque will be bringing home to Ames a conference title in the triple jump after her last-gasp victory Sunday at the Big 12 Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The Venezuelan recorded a final jump of 45-3 1/2 to win her third conference title of 2017, and complete the indoor-outdoor triple jump sweep.

The Cyclones also brought home four bronze medals on the day, and some impressive fourth-place finishes as well. On the weekend, both teams finished seventh in the team standings, the men with 56 points and the women with 55.

Luque got up to second on her second leap of 44-4 1/4. However, she found herself back down to fourth place after four rounds. The Venezuelan pushed her way back to second with a fifth jump of 45-0 1/4. First place was 45-3, and Luque was able to surpass that on her final attempt as her wind-aided 45-3 1/2 pushed her past K-State’s Shardia Lawrence.

Luque picked up her third conference title of 2017, and became the fifth Big 12 triple jumper in the last six years to complete the indoor-outdoor sweep. Though all the jumps today were above the legal wind of 2.0, making them ineligible for school record pursuits, Luque’s winning jump of 45-3 1/2 was under a 4.0 wind, putting Luque at No. 3 in the NCAA Division I rankings this season.

Evelyne Guay’s 1,500 was one of the strangest races of the season, as the pack went out in a supremely slow 85-second first 400. From there, the runners finally picked up the pace. The seven-runner pack started to break up with 450 to go, with the Canadian finding a comfortable spot in third, which she brought home in 4:37.25.

Jasmine Staebler also brought home a third-place finish in the women’s 800 in 2:11.04. The Cyclone sophomore was surrounded by the highlighter orange of Oklahoma State, whose five sat back the first 400. The final lap saw two Cowgirls head to the front, but Staebler was able to break up the quintet of OSU runners and settle in for third place.

Roshon Roomes also collected bronze in the 800, crossing third in 1:51.49 Jaymes Dennison, however, got tangled up and took a spill near the end of his first lap ending his chances. As he jogged around to finish the race, he came to the assistance of Texas Tech’s Charles Jones, who pulled a hamstring while leading on the final lap, and helped the injured Red Raider across the line.

Derek Jones got the Cyclones’ fourth bronze medal of the day in the 400-meter hurdles in 52.30. It was a race for second from the start as 2016 Olympian Byron Robinson was on his way to a sub-50 clocking. Jones had a strong final 100, but was just edged at the line by Oklahoma’s Bryce Douglas in the race for second. Jones’ bronze medal tied for his best finish of his career at the Big 12s, and means he finishes his Big 12 Championships career having scored in all eight conference championships he participated in.
