Update on NIACC athletics

COUNCIL BLUFFS – NIACC’s Wal Khat won the 800-meter run and placed second in the 1,500 at the NJCAA Region XI meet Saturday and Sunday.

Khat won the 800 in a time of 1 minute, 56.66 seconds just edging out Iowa Central’s Ashenafi Hatte, who was second in 1:56.71.

In the 1,500, Hatte won in 3:57.78 and Khat was second in 3:57.82. Also in the 1,500, NIACC’s Blake Keller was fifth (4:15.48) and Canyon Kuhlmann was seventh (4:27.45).

NIACC’s John Kraft was second in the 5,000 in a time of 16:04.11.

NIACC was fifth in the team standings with 51 points. Iowa Central was the regional champion with 359 points and Iowa Western was second with 263 points.

Also for the NIACC men, Ethan Klasi was eighth in the 400 in a time of 51.59 and Dennis Elms Jansson was seventh in the javelin (35.68 meters).

The NIACC 4×400-meter relay team of David Carter, Elms Jansson, Scott Hengesteg and Klasi was third in 3:30.44.

NIACC’s 4×100 team of Brody Goos, Jakob Luna, Klasi and Andre McKinney was fourth in 43.53. The Trojans’ 4×800 team of Keller, Samuel Dean, Carter and Kraft was fourth in 8:23.57.

NIACC’s Bonsall places fifth in 400 hurdles at regionals

COUNCIL BLUFFS – NIACC’s Cassandra Bonsall placed fifth in the 400-meter hurdles in a time of 1 minute, 11.95 seconds at the NJCAA Region XI track and field meet, which was held Saturday and Sunday.

Also for the NIACC women, Kendra Schmidt was sixth in the 800 in a time of 2:38.68.

NIACC’s Lindsey Haley was seventh in the 100 (13.44) and Bryanna Lambert was eighth (13.94), Amy Fullerton was seventh in the 400 hurdles (1:13.11) and Michaela Foster was eighth in the 800 (2:53.14).

NIACC men’s golf team places sixth at regionals

AMES – The NIACC men’s golf team placed sixth at the NJCAA Region XI tournament Sunday at the Veenker Memorial Golf Course on the Iowa State campus.

The Trojans shot a 322 on Sunday after an opening-round 333 on Saturday for their two-day total of 655.

Kirkwood was the regional champion with a 601. Iowa Central (620) and DMACC (625) also earned berths to the national tournament.

Freshman Anthony Emanuel led the Trojans with a 84-77 – 161. Also for the Trojans, Joe Nordquist shot a 83-79 – 162, Josh Schaefer shot a 82-82 – 164, Zach Nicholson shot a 84-86 – 170 and Devin Koob shot a 86-84 – 170.

NIACC baseball team earns first-round bye at regional tournament

WATERLOO – The NIACC baseball team, which shared the ICCAC title with Iowa Central, enters the NJCAA Region XI tournament as the No. 2 seed.

NIACC (36-17 overall, 16-8 in the ICCAC) received a first-round bye and play at 3:30 p.m. Friday at Riverfront Stadium.

Sixth-seed Ellsworth faces seventh-seed Iowa Lakes in a play-in game at noon on Thursday. The winner of that contest faces third-seed Southeastern at 7 p.m. Thursday with that winner facing the Trojans on Friday.

The championship game is set for 3:30 p.m. on Sunday with a possibility of a second title game at 11 a.m. on Monday.

It is the second straight season that NIACC has shared the regular season league title and enter the regional tournament as the No. 2 seed.

Last season, the Trojans shared the regular-season crown with Southeastern, won the regional and district tournaments and advanced to the NJCAA Division II World Series for the third time in four seasons.
