Trump willing to negotiate on NAFTA

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The United States has lost over one-fourth of its manufacturing jobs since NAFTA was approved, the White House said earlier this year, but now President Trump says he may not kill the trade deal.

Thursday morning, President Trump tweeted about NAFTA – the North American Free Trade Agreement – a trade deal blamed by many for chasing jobs out of the country. He said “I received calls from the President of Mexico and the Prime Minister of Canada asking to renegotiate NAFTA rather than terminate. I agreed….subject to the fact that if we do not reach a fair deal for all, we will then terminate NAFTA. Relationships are good-deal very possible!”

On April 20, President Trump said “NAFTA, believe me, was a disaster and continues to be a disaster for our country. The fact is, NAFTA — whether it’s Mexico or Canada — is a disaster for our country. It’s a disaster. It’s a trading disaster. And we’ll be reporting back sometime over the next two weeks as to NAFTA and what we’re going to do about it.”

As promised during his campaign, President Trump signaled he was ready to pull out of NAFTA completely earlier this week.  After that threat, the New York Times reported “the Mexican peso plummeted in trading after news broke at midday on Wednesday that the White House had drafted an executive order withdrawing the United States from Nafta.”

The U.S. must give a 6-month notice to get out of the deal.

Trump played hard-ball with Canada recently, slapping a tariff on Canadian lumber that is imported into the U.S.
