Leon “LeRoy” Cleveland, 81, of Charles City, passed away Monday, April 3, 2017 at his home.
A memorial service for LeRoy Cleveland will be held 2:00 p.m. Saturday, April 8, 2017 at The Bridge Church (First Wesleyan Church) in Charles City with Pastor Robert Williams officiating.
A gathering of family and friends will be at the church on Saturday, April 8, 2017 from 12:30 p.m. until the start of the memorial service.
Leon LeRoy Cleveland, the son of Leon Lester and Elaine (Hunt) Cleveland, was born March 18, 1936 on the family farm Southeast of Nashua. He attended country school through 8th grade and graduated from Nashua High School in 1955. LeRoy then went to trade school at DeVry out of Chicago for Electronics. When his schooling was complete, LeRoy returned home to begin farming.
LeRoy was united in marriage to Patricia “Pat” Morgan on August 6, 1961 at Calvary Baptist Church in Charles City. The couple made their home a mile from LeRoy’s family farm and continued farming (both field and dairy) while raising their family. LeRoy also started a business out of his home in 1961, LeRoy’s TV & Appliance, which he moved into Nashua around 1972. He continued to both farm and operate his business until around 1990 when he semi-retired. LeRoy and Pat moved into Charles City in 2001.
LeRoy was a member of First Wesleyan Church (The Bridge Church) in Charles City. He was a Sunday school superintendent at Horton Baptist Church, played piano for all of the churches he attended and served as a board member (Calvary Baptist, Horton Baptist, Temple Baptist and First Wesleyan). He loved to fly his own plane from his hangar and runway on his farm, go waterskiing and served as a Boy Scout Leader.
Living family members include his wife of 56 years, Pat of Charles City; four children: Scott Cleveland (Erin Miller) of New Hampton, June (Chuck) Cleveland-Newcomb of Colorado Springs, Colorado, David Cleveland of Bassett and Kerry (Scott) Murray of Nashua; nine grandchildren: Kelly (Josh) Papineau, Kyle Keifer (Jessica Loftis), Kori Jennings, Justin Hansen, Deon Cleveland, Dalton Cleveland, Darian Cleveland, Silas Cleveland and Deacon Cleveland; four great-grandchildren; sister, Jane Krough of Wellsburg; along with numerous nieces, nephews, other family members and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and his brother, William “Bill” Cleveland.
