Police return fire after man enters Waterloo convenience store with gun and leaves, shooting

WATERLOO – A Man was shot after he walked into a Waterloo convenience store with a hand gun and then walked out of the store firing the weapon.

On Sunday, February 12, 2017, at approximately 2:48 PM, Waterloo Police Officers were dispatched to a Kwik Star convenience store located at 707 Broadway Street in Waterloo, Iowa, on a report of a male with a gun.

Joseph Alexander Manuele, 48, entered Kwik Star displaying a handgun. All employees and other people in the store were able to safely exit. Responding officers set up a perimeter around the store and made contact with Manuele. After a several of minutes, Manuele exited the store with the handgun in his hand. Manuele discharged his firearm as he walked towards the officers. Waterloo Police Officers returned fire. Manuele was struck and was admitted to Allen Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

On Monday, February 13, 2017, Manuele was charged with Going Armed with Intent (D Felony) and Carrying Weapons (Aggravated Misdemeanor) with a cash bond of $100,000.

This is an on-going investigation and additional charges may be forthcoming upon completion of the investigation.
