Wrestling: Cyclones lose to Mountaineers, 22-20

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The Iowa State wrestling team (1-11, 1-6 Big 12) was defeated by West Virginia (3-12, 1-3 Big 12), 22-20. The dual came down to bonus point victories as the Cyclones and Mountaineers split the contest, 5-5.

Heading into the final match, Iowa State held a 20-16 advantage. West Virginia’s Brandon Ngati was able to notch the hail marry fall, pinning Joe Scanlan in 4:28 to take the dual.

The Cyclones raced out to a 15-3 lead at the intermission. Iowa State won four of the first five matches with victories coming from redshirt seniors Kyle Larson, Earl Hall and John Meeks, as well as redshirt freshman, Colston DiBlasi.

Larson, Hall and Meeks put the Cyclones up 9-0. At 125 pounds and 133 pounds, Iowa State picked received decisions from their seniors. Larson defeated Devin Brown by 4-2 decision and Hall knocked of Cory Stainbrook by 2-1 decision.

In the match at 141 pounds, Meeks put on an offensive display. The Des Moines, Iowa native racked up 1:50 of riding time behind seven takedowns. He went on to defeat West Virginia’s Joe Wheeling by 16-9 decision.

At 157 pounds, DiBlasi did what he’s done so well this season; pinning opponents. It took the redshirt freshman just 1:04 to lock up a cradle to pin Dayton Garrett.

After the break, redshirt senior Lelund Weatherspoon got the Cyclones going again. He jumped out to a 6-2 lead in the first period on Ty Willard. He poured on 10 points in the second to blow the match open. A stall point and a takedown gave Weatherspoon a 19-3 technical victory in 5:44.

Match of the Night – 133 Pounds
Earl Hall completed what only 36 other Cyclone wrestlers have done before him. He won his 100th career match, taking down West Virginia’s Cory Stainbrook, 2-1.

Iowa State heads back to Ames where they’ll take on the Minnesota Golden Gophers next Sunday, Feb. 19 at 2 p.m. The Cyclone seniors will be honored at the dual.
