WASHINGTON – In accordance with a federal judge’s ruling, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has suspended any and all actions implementing the affected sections of the Executive Order entitled, “Protecting the Nation from Foreign Terrorist Entry into the United States.”
This includes actions to suspend passenger system rules that flag travelers for operational action subject to the Executive Order.
DHS personnel will resume inspection of travelers in accordance with standard policy and procedure.
At the earliest possible time, the Department of Justice intends to file an emergency stay of this order and defend the president’s Executive Order, which is lawful and appropriate. The order is intended to protect the homeland and the American people, and the president has no higher duty and responsibility than to do so.
The Executive Order signed on January 27, 2017, by President DonaldTrump imposed a 90-day pause on the entry into the United States of nationals from Iraq, Syria, Sudan, Iran, Somalia, Libya, and Yemen. This pause does not apply to Lawful Permanent Residents, dual citizens with passports from a country other than the seven listed, or those traveling on diplomatic, NATO, or UN visas.
The Executive Order allowed for the proper review and establishment of standards to prevent terrorist or criminal infiltration by foreign nationals, DHS said in a previous statement. The United States has the world’s most generous immigration system, yet it has been repeatedly exploited by terrorists and other malicious actors who seek to do us harm. In order to ensure that the United States government can conduct a thorough and comprehensive analysis of the national security risks posed from our immigration system, it imposed a 90-day suspension on entry to the United States of nationals of certain designated countries—countries that were designated by Congress and the Obama Administration as posing national security risks in the Visa Waiver Program.
However, Federal Judge James Robart of Seattle ruled against the President’s Executive Order on Friday, thus suspending its enforcement across the nation.
Trump and his administration need to learn that he cannot rule like a dictator and must follow the rule of law. I am glad we live in a Country that has checks and balances and will stop a president when he over steps his powers.
