RURAL WORTH COUNTY – A Pipeline has broken in Worth county, and thousands of gallons of diesel fuel were released.
NIT received word there has been a “pretty big” pipeline burst in Worth county of the Magellan Pipeline Wednesday morning. The location of the break is on Wheelerwood Road, between 400th and 390th Street. This is near Joice and Hanlontown, west of Interstate 35.
A source tells NIT there are “lots of manpower and equipment on scene”. Just afternoon, NIT is informed that 138,600 gallons of #2 diesel fuel were released. Workers and authorities continue to work the problem.
A call to a Magellan Pipeline media rep was not immediately returned.
The Iowa Department of Natural Resources later Wednesday confirmed that a Magellan Pipeline Company’s diesel line ruptured early this morning in Worth County about three miles north and one mile east of Hanlontown.
An updated estimate from the company indicates 138,600 gallons of diesel fuel were released. Iowa DNR staff onsite report the fuel pooled in a farm field and does not appear to have reached surface waters.
Worth County emergency officials are working with Magellan Pipeline Company to ensure the spill is contained. The company’s environmental contractors are vacuuming spilled diesel fuel from the scene.
Weather conditions, including high winds and blowing snow, are impacting cleanup efforts.
Worth County Emergency Response, several area county sheriff departments and Iowa DNR responded to the emergency.
Iowa DNR and local responders will be onsite, monitoring the situation, continuing to assess the spill and cleanup.

I agree we can’t live without fossil fuels right now, we need pipelines to keep America running. What I have a problem with is a cabinet full of oil barons stopping progress towards renewable energy so they can line their pockets that much more. Fossil fuels will run out. Wouldn’t America be great if we were not dependent on fossil fuels? I’m not even talking about climate change, I’m simply talking about American independence through renewable energy.

There are 2 1/2 million miles of pipelines in the US. Without them most people could’nt afford to heat their homes or gasoline.
Nothing is perfect but in the larger scheme of things pipelines make life better for all mankind.
I vote for building the pipelines. I like the quality of life they provide us all!
Just to clarify, it wasn’t a leak in Fieldstone. They found a weak spot and came in and replaced a section of the pipeline. They were very nice and respectful and did a really good job.

It came from the pipeline in Worth county not Fieldstone.
They are talking about two different situations.
She is talking about the non-leak in Fieldstone Addition in Clear Lake last week. It was just a dent in the pipeline, NOT a leak.
Pipelines are still far safer than rail or truck transport, and much more cost efficient. These things are rare and Magellan will take care of the clean up. I think the farmer that owns this land will be paid well for lifetime for this incident that damaged his land.
These things are not RARE and all pipelines leak. How about we give you a big full glass of penzoil. Its time we switch to alternate entergy resources.

What does the pipeline carry? I assume his was the pipeline laid in the mid-70’s. A farmer died this fall near Tekamah, NE, when a Magellan anhydrous pipeline leaked. His son barely escaped after he went looking for him. 26 farms had to be evacuated for several days. These pipelines are aging and becoming dangerous. There was a leak in the Fieldstone neighborhood last week.
No there was not a leak in Fieldstone last weak. There was a repair to a pipeline. I took video of the repair and can testify the Magallan Pipeline Company was very professional and performed the repair without incident.
You are correct. It was a dented pipe. Before it was repaired they thought it might be a leak.
