Fun New Christmas Traditions to Start with Your Family

Christmas is here again, and with the holiday season comes time-old traditions.  Many of us come together to decorate the tree, drink egg nog, and watch Christmas movies.  But this year, it may be time to try something new.  If you feel like busting out of your holiday rut with your family, consider some of these ideas for the coming days before Christmas.

Upgrade your Gingerbread House

This year, make a gingerbread Tardis from Dr. Who or a Hobbit Hole from Lord of the Rings.  Some people have even gone so far as to create a gingerbread Iron Throne from Game of Thrones or AT-AT Walker from Star Wars.  In the spirit of new holiday traditions, why not get creative?  Get the whole family together to recreate icons from your favorite movies, television shows, and characters from pop culture! Make sure you’ve got your show streaming on any device in the house with Slingbox while you create!

DIY Christmas Ornaments

Instead of buying new ornaments, try crafting some together with the family.  Making a Christmas ornament is not as difficult as it looks, and it can be quite a lot of fun to do! Simply buy clear glass ornaments and fill them with paint.  This paint can be glitter, metallic or matte. Decorate them using your famous Christmas characters, or even make your own based on pop culture characters!  You can do the same using felt, paper, or even Legos for kids! The possibilities are only limited to your imagination.

Celebrate with the Yule Log

This is actually an old tradition, revitalized.  We’ve all heard of a yule log, but not all of us know what it is.  The Yule log is actually a log that was traditionally burned in the fireplaces of homes in Europe since before the Medieval Era, used to welcome the coming of winter.  Now, the Yule log is represented in a cake, complete with wood grain frosting!  The insides of the cake are actually delicious—it’s made of chocolate filled with raspberry jam.  It originates in France and French colonies, where it is called Bûche de Noël.  Try baking one with your family and have the kids help decorating.

Try Wearing Something New

Remember when your grandma, your mom, or your silly aunt made you a strange-looking sweater for the family Christmas party? Well, now you can purchase ugly Christmas sweaters and relive the hilarity of that experience. They are more than a trend—Christmas sweaters are becoming of a staple of holiday get-togethers with friends and family.  Make your friends laugh when you walk in with a funny sweater with pom poms, ribbons, and cat motifs all over.  This year make it Christmas sweater weather!

Share Christmas Legends with the Children

Christmas traditions vary from country to country, and their stories do to!  Research the different folklore that cultures have and share them with the children.  There may even be old traditions from other countries worth checking out to add to the holiday spirit.  The stories may be religious or secular, and there are many to choose from—as diverse as the cultures they come from.

Break out the Karaoke

Christmas music is everywhere.  It’s in the mall, it’s in your gym, and it’s the elevator music as you go up to work.  Even if you do not know them by heart, chances are you know enough to sing along!  Gather the family together and sing karaoke at home from your television.  Don’t worry about messing up the words—it may even be more fun to make up words of your own!  Maybe you can make up your own songs as a family and manage to laugh yourself silly every year thereafter.

Make this Christmas one to remember by incorporating any of these new traditions, and give the holiday some new life to make the occasion wonderful for every member of the family.
