Screen Shot 2016-08-28 at 8.49.25 PMMASON CITY – The North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC) athletic department will add women’s soccer to its roster of sports in 2017.

“We are excited about the return of women’s soccer to our campus,” NIACC athletic director Dan Mason said. “In speaking with the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference and athletic directors in from our region, it became apparent that this is a great fit for NIACC athletics.”

NIACC had played women’s soccer from 2001-04.

Currently, there are 143 National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) women’s Division I soccer teams, including seven in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC). Hawkeye Community College, Indian Hills, Iowa Central, Iowa Lakes, Iowa Western, Northeast Community College and Scott Community College are the seven schools in the conference that field women’s soccer teams.

Girls’ soccer is a growing sport in the high school levels in Iowa and Minnesota. Last spring, Iowa had 142 girls’ soccer teams and 131 teams in 2011. In Minnesota, 193 girls’ teams played soccer compared to 176 in 2006.
