IOWA CITY – A sordid tale of animal cruelty seems to be playing out in Iowa City, where a young man allegedly kicked a dog left in his care and caused serious injury.
Police in Iowa City say Lucas Van Orden V, age 22, kicked a dog which appears to be a Corgi that was left for grooming at the Creature Comfort Veterinary Center, located at 2122 Act Circle. The incident took place July 9.
According to a report on KCRG TV, the little animal suffered “multiple fractured ribs, bruised lungs, and subcutaneous emphysema. Following the injuries, the dog was taken to a pet emergency room where it stayed for several nights for observation.”
Van Orden V has only been charged with animal neglect, a charge which was brought on July 28. Allegedly, Van Orden V admitted to police what he had done.
KCRG further reported that Van Orden V is the son of the vet clinic’s practice manager, Lucas Van Orden IV.
In the wake of the incident and arrest, the vet clinic’s Facebook page had three poor reviews of one star out of five, some of which mentioned what had transpired. One woman wrote “This place needs to be shut down… the abuser is the Vet’s son.”
Van Orden IV released a statement on the incident to KCRG, saying “The owners and management of Creature Comfort Veterinary Center are aware of an animal injury during grooming, and subsequent citation for animal neglect issued by the City of Iowa City against the groomer. Any animal injury is of paramount concern, and is not tolerated in any respect. Immediately upon learning of this incident, the groomer was discharged from his employment.”

Follow Up Story: “Public Slams Lucas face-first into a pile of fresh dog feces. Public then rolls him over on his back then kicks his testes MANY times. Then public jumps on his ribs til ALL are broken. Then public celebrates for an hour or so prior to calling 9-1-1 for Lucas.” Do NOT arrest him, send him to court, etc. Why should TAXPAYERS get charged for all these fees???
