FORT DODGE – Law enforcement in Fort Dodge were forced to confront a man with a knife who was behaving in a threatening manner Thursday morning.

On Thursday, July 28 at approximately 10:30 AM, officers with the Fort Dodge Police Department, in tandem with Deputies with the Webster County Sheriff’s Office and the Iowa State Patrol, were dispatched to the area of Wal-Mart, located at 3036 1st Avenue South, for a male with a knife behaving in a threatening manner. Law Enforcement was able to locate a male with a knife outside of the Wal-Mart store, by the Automotive Center. The male was initially found to be in a highly agitated state, making threats to either harm himself directly or harm officers with the knife he was holding, in an attempt to get a lethal reaction from the officers.

Due to the calm and professional approach of all officers, they were able to learn that the male was very distraught over personal circumstances in his life and he was in need of help. After 20 minutes of talking, at 10:49 AM, the male discarded his weapon and began the process of giving up and allowing himself to be taken to the hospital. He was taken into police care with minimal resistance and was then transported by Unity Point Ambulance to the hospital for further treatment of his condition.

The name of the male in this incident is not being released. For Dodge police said Friday that there are “thankful that no one was injured during this incident and we hope that the man will make a swift recovery… all agencies that participated in the successful closure of this event. The cooperation, level of skill and professionalism shown today is something to be proud of.”
