More tragedy on RAGBRAI after sleeping camper hit by pickup truck

logo-iowa-state-patrolSHENANDOAH, IOWA – A man involved in the annual RAGBRAI event was seriously hurt as he slept in a tent and a pickup truck driver struck and dragged him.

According to the Iowa State Patrol, the accident took place around 11:34 AM Sunday, July 24 at the 59er Hotel and campgrounds near Shenandoah, Iowa. 55-year-old Danny Cardin of Homer, Louisiana was driving his 1996 Ford F250 on a private drive there when he left a roadway and struck a tent occupied by a man. The tent was dragged with the man inside, under the vehicle, for about 50 feet. Cardin continued to drive and then parked at his campsite.

Injured in the accident was 67-year-old James Foley of Middleburg, Florida. He was taken by Lifenet Helicopter to Creighton Hospital in Omaha with serious injuries.

According to RAGBRAI.com, Cardin was charged with serious injury by vehicle and leaving the scene of a serious injury accident. Records show he is being held in the Fremont County Jail at his time.

Earlier Sunday, another Florida man was killed when a pickup truck driver ran him down as he rode his bike near the start of this year’s RAGBRAI ride. Wayne L. Ezell, age 72 of Jacksonville, Florida, was pronounced dead at the scene. RAGBRAI.com reported that Ezell and Foley knew each other.  Foley was not a rider, but was helping his friends transport their belongings to stops along the RAGBRAI route.
