Mason City School Board announces changes to health insurance plan resulting in thousands of dollars in savings and $1 million surplus

MASON CITY – The Mason City Community School Board announced today that “positive changes” in the District’s employee health insurance plan administration will result in cost savings of more than $42,000 annually. The Board will also need to decide how to apply more than $1,000,000 in excess health plan fund reserves back into the general fund to help support ongoing school education initiatives and capital projects over the next three years, according to board member Jodi Draper.

Timothy Johnston, CEO of National Corporate Benefits Group NCBG dba Kingston Life & Health and his team were tasked by the School Board to conduct a five-year historical audit and review of the health insurance plan underpinnings and its financing. They were also asked to make final recommendations for the 2016-2017 Health Insurance Plan year at the special session of the Board held May 24, 2016.

Johnston states, “As the health care industry continues to change, our firm has remained ahead of the curve. With analytical technology, we are able to obtain meaningful information that helps us evaluate cost drivers, trends and savings opportunities associated with our clients’ benefits plans. In addition, we work to evaluate the impact of various plan management initiatives and forecast the impact of future health plan changes.”

Johnston credited the School Board with “taking the initiative to examine the details of the health insurance plan administrative costs, claim cost drivers, and looking forward long term to protect the viability and sustainability of keeping a quality health plan in place for the School District.”

“The Board members,” who voted unanimously in favor of the changes, “should all be complimented on their efforts to save funds while improving options,” said Ryan Berven, VP of Compliance and Underwriting with Kingston who was also instrumental in facilitating the reinsurance marketing and new claim funding strategies.

Johnston added that he “is excited for future initiatives in the Mason City area” that he believes “will further improve the health care experience of all involved.”

The following are among the projects Johnston is working on: technologically advanced and interactive workplace wellness programs, employee well-being health, integrated virtual health access, and chronic disease education and management in collaboration with the hospital systems. “This is an exciting time to work in our profession, because our clients can see for themselves the actual, real- world, positive results of how they benefit from what we do”.

They pay minimal premiums, just like city/county workers……don’t kid yourself. Affordable Care Act is to blame for the enormous premium increases and higher deductibles. That’s why Obama is NOT covered by A.C.A., and all of DC leaders. As for that $ million dollar surplus….no tax refund…..it’s government. But just wait……. taxes will increase with all the new property assessments 🙁

I am sure I will get a break on my property tax as a result ! NOT!

So what changed? Are the employees finally going to actually pay something?

The majority of employees do pay for their health insurance. Administrators do not.

The majority pay ‘peanuts’ , minimal premium costs.

FYI: If the general public knew what city/county workers pay for their premiums…..they’d be really pissed.

You seem to know it all, give me the figures that you say. Not just something you heard 1st hand from a friend of your neighbor’s daughter’s son who work with a guy who gets that.

Perfect response ! If you knew how bad the prescription coverage was compared to other schools, cities and not for profits..this idiot who seems to know it all would shut it ! I had to switch to the schools plan when I had to go part time at a non-profit. And had to go on my husband’s insurance One more I pd $25 for is now $ 338. One for $10 now 134 One for $10. Now $137 One for $30 now $334 and a new one for asthma..$538. Excellent coverage right ?? Needless to say I cannot afford my meds..
