MASON CITY – Mason City police are looking for guns that were taken from the backseat of an un-marked police car this morning – and hope to retrieve them before any unfortunate incident.

Mason City police say that at approximately 10:00 a.m. this morning, they learned that two long guns and related police equipment were stolen from an unmarked police department vehicle over the weekend. The unmarked police vehicle was parked in the 300 block of South Tennessee Avenue. The weapons and equipment were taken from the back seat. An officer had placed them items in the back seat while dealing with a maintenance issue related to the trunk. One of the doors on the unmarked vehicle may not have been locked.

The first weapon is a Colt M-16 A1 rifle. It is serial number 5315092. I had one magazine with it that contains 28 rounds of .223 ammunition. The second weapon is a Remington 12-guage shotgun, model 870, serial number D588309M. It has ‘CID #5’ on the gun and had seventeen rounds of 00 Buck and twelve slugs with it. Both guns were in a black cloth double long gun case.

MCPD personnel are investigating this vehicle burglary at this time. Police ask that anyone with information contact the  department at 641-421-3636, or contact North Iowa CrimeStoppers. Police will complete a full review of this matter internally “to determine how this happened, how we can insure that it doesn’t happen in the future, and how to address this accountability issue with our personnel.”

Public safety, police explain, “is our utmost concern and we are asking for the public’s help in getting these weapons back into our possession. The weapons may be turned in to Chief Jeff Brinkley by contacting him at 641-421-2715. Our worst fear is that these weapons will be used against another person. If the weapons are not turned in voluntarily and are found as a result of our investigation, the suspect(s) will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”

A neighbor’s home was raided last week by the local SWAT based upon . . . a tip. No warrant and no permission was given for the search. Total findings . . . nothing.

the undercover police officer should be repremanded for even having these in t6he back seat of his car why should police officers getaway with the things that would put citizens in jail im soooo tired of law enforcements not going to jail or being fired. basically they get a slap on the hand we have police right here in mason city we have attorneys judges socail workers all types of people who have done just as much as anyone could have done so why judge another just cuz they have been in jail a number of times judge your own self and clean your side of the streeet and check urself before pointing fingers cuz they may be an ex felon

Constructing a simple sentence with basic elementary school punctuation would make your post more credible.

Its time for a Citizens Oversight and Review Board to be established by the MC Council. Police serve and work for the Public and need to be accountable to the people.

You think the MCPD would be looking this hard for any stolen from you or I? Even if you or had guns stolen from our car? No way!

LAW ENFORCEMENT: two killed in our jails, deputy parties and fights, car hit by policeman, car hit by drunk police woman, guns stolen from unlocked police car. WOW, do you feel safe?

..and Hillary with proven 14 felony counts, runs for president.

A MCPD officer is probably on ‘PAID administrative leave’ over this negligent incident. However, this will probably end up with a huge cover-up. …… and so life goes on……keep your doors locked and eyes wide open !

Trunk maintenance issue what does that have to do with locking doors to prevent the supposed theft, sounds fishy, at the very least negligent and a job with less responsibilities would be the solution, i.e. someone should be fired.

The Police Union will protect the officer. He will get administrative punishment (A disciplinary write up) and that will be it. Don’t blame the chief, blame the union.

first off how do you know it was a union officer. Second this should be handled by somebody other than the Mason City police. The union has nothing to do with this. You should be more upset with the policies of the department and that they enforce them fairly. You really have no clue on how a union works or what the members stand for.

I know a hell of a lot more than you will ever know. I have negotiated many contracts and formed unions. Don’t tell me what I know as you are totally ignorant.

Since you know so much. Who was the officer and was he a member of the police union. 2nd i if he belonged to the union and this was a discipline issue it would end up in arbitration and a third party would decide. So can you answer the first question? If you can’t you are making a assumption just to bash the union.

Jason Hugi. No clue on union membership.

Man oh man you must of gotten outsmarted by some Union people with all the crap you talk. Sorry but working people have the right to be treated with respect and dignity and the disciplinary actions have been negotiated in good faith on both sides. I am a manager and I have no problem disciplining a Union member when its called for. Yes there are steps to follow but any good supervisor can handle those. And yes you can fire a Union worker right off but it must be for serious violations.

In the military if a person misplaces his weapon they shut the whole base down and the soldier is disciplined. I can only imagine what would happen to an officer that had his weapon, let alone 2 of them, stolen.

sorry this was me.

Sounds like it might be an electrical issue with vehicle itself? Not that officer error is out of the question. BTW, isn’t this like three major stories in under a week that NIT has broken, followed belatedly by other area media, who are obviously monitoring so they have to actually go out and cover news themselves? Say what you will about Matt and NIT, he’s performing a valuable service to North Iowa. Can you imagine what was no doubt going on without NIT?

**so they DON’T have to

that’s what happens when u get a outside chief who doesn’t know the department,

About the same thing happened at the High school about 6 years ago, when 2 students stole guns out of an unlocked police car. They were eventually caught BUT because of who they were, NOTHING happened to them, or the negligent officers!

Jesus is this mayberry Iowa. Cops running into cars nothing here. Another cop runs into car nothing here. Then two guns stolen out of car nothing here. Maybe after the first accident if that cop was let go we wouldn’t be here with two guns in the hands of who knows. Just maybe the cops would take their job a little more serious. Some times you have to make a example out of somebody to get the rest of the employees attention.

Same cop as the texting parked-car hitting guy, I bet

Yep, bet you’re right.

inside job

my thoughts exactly

Hope the morons don’t get shot with their own guns . Maybe….?

Everybody hates the cops, unless they need their help. Cops are human to, but we hold them to a higher standard. Being human makes them prone to make mistakes. Just think, if this was a perfect world, void of ALL scoff laws, thieves, perverts, etc, we wouldn’t need the cops, but that will never happen. Believe it or not, we have people in this town whose daily goal is to cruise the streets looking for something to steal. Most people don’t/won’t get involved, but if we all would be aware of what’s going on around us, we might be able to stop some of the vandalism, thievery and drug dealing that goes on in this town. I’m hoping that somebody turns these thieves in before they use the guns to hurt/kill someone. I would.

unreal.. who is hiring these idiots… someone better get fired.

They talk about the AR 15 being an assault weapon, which it isn’t BUT the Colt M16 A1 is, so now there is a fully automatic weapon loose on the streets.

Once again David, you take things at face value without doing any research.
While the standard Colt M16A1 is capable of automatic fire, the rifle in question is not.
According to MCPD Chief Jeff Brinkley…
“We have replaced the trigger group so that it is semiautomatic,” Brinkley said.
Do some research David & quit with your knee jerk reactions.

Still this is a very bad situation.

bcuz it is impossible to change it back.

And while you are at it, learn to spell.

CRIMINALS

>implying they care about the law
>worried about what a website tells them

?

The internal parts on a M16 are mostly different than an AR 15, if they changed the trigger group to a semi auto, the trigger is not regulated by the BATF so it is possible to order an auto one. All you are looking for is a fight, you don’t care how absolutely stupid you look. I know AR’s and i know M16’s so kiss my ass.

Oops

Dumb mcpd !!!not surprising at all

Stupid mcpd not surprising at all

Better hope no one gets shot by one of these guns, could be a huge law suit. Damn I just can’t believe how dumb people are.

Man I agree with anon 100%, we’ve had 2 accident, no charges now this. What in the F**K kind of COPS do we have working up there? I dont care who the cop is he/she needs to be FIRED on the spot. Man this is truely a sad police department. I hope theres a investigation done by the DCI as this might be an inside job.

You’ve got to be kidding me police may think 1 door was unlocked.Someone needs FIRED! now.Time for New Chief to do his job and make someone look at our major flaw in the way MCPD conducts business. Some kids could of stole these and something very bad could happen.Hopefully found today and everyone is safe until found.Just a thought don’t use car until trunk issue solved would of been what anyone with a brain would of done.

Don’t blame everything on the chief SCHMUCK !! Officer should b accountable not to bright undercover lol

YA!Probably a handful that need to be Fired. All we have in the MCPD is a bunch of cops that like to write traffic tickets to auto drivers. But let all the Crank heads ride on their bikes and steal and deal their crap .Normal citizens can pick them out why can’t MCPD do something those losers.
