MASON CITY – The Mason City Police Department and the Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s Office announced today the 2016 Citizen Police Academy. The class is scheduled to begin on Thursday, March 24, 2016. Sessions will be held each Thursday Evening, from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm, with the last class taking place on May 12, 2016.

The purpose of the Citizen Police Academy is to provide an educational opportunity for citizens to learn first-hand about police and sheriff operations, procedures, and training. The Academy helps to enhance police-community relationships by providing citizens with insight into the internal workings of their law enforcement agencies. The Academy class will also interact with administrators, investigators and patrol personnel from both agencies. Participants in the Citizen Police Academy will come away with a better understanding how of law enforcement functions within the criminal justice system. Further, it is our hope to give participants insight beyond the “what” and “how” of law enforcement to the “why” of what we do.

The Citizen Police Academy is open to anyone 18 years of age or older that is out of high school and lives or works in Cerro Gordo County, subject to a background check. Those interested must apply in advance. There is no cost to participants.

Applications can be picked up in person at the Mason City Police Department or printed out from Police Department or Sheriff’s Office website. Applications can be returned to either agency and must be received by Friday, March 4, 2016 for consideration.
