MASON CITY – IRS scammers are apparently getting more brazen, as Mason City police report an officer got a call from one.
The Mason City Police Department reported Wednesday that they continue to receive reports of scammers impersonating IRS employees, making calls in the North Iowa area. Police say one of their officers got called.
Evidently, the bunko-artists are ramping up the pressure during these calls.
“Scammers using this tactic demand immediate payment and are very threatening,” police say.
Police warn citizens “not to provide personal information to anyone over the phone when someone calls you like this.”
It was also reported today from Colorado that IRS scammers went so far as to threaten a person with a police visit and jail time if that person didn’t pay up immediately. KKTV reports that the victim became so emotional and distraught from the scare tactics that the IRS scammers actually called 911, leading police to swarm that person’s home and sending a nearby school into lockdown.
The federal government reports this week that as of February 9, 2016, the below listed suspected phone numbers are known to be used by the scammers to call potential victims (of course there could be others):
