Violent Mason City man to be sentenced in attack on woman

MASON CITY – A Mason City man who allegedly violently attacked a woman and her car will be sentenced next month after entering guilty pleas.

Police were called on the morning of September 17, 2015 to a North End house and arrested a man on felony charges after a number of injured persons were discovered. According to Mason City police, at 1:58 AM that morning, an argument was reported near the intersection of 14th Street and North Washington. Officers arrived to find a female lying on the ground near a vehicle that had several slashed tires and a broken windshield in front of 1309 North Washington.

Mason City fire medics were called and transported the female to the hospital with undisclosed injuries.

Police continued to investigate the assault and soon arrested 32-year-old Brian Nathaniel Smith of 1309 North Washington in Mason City for Willful Injury (D Felony), Criminal Mischief 2nd Degree ( D Felony). Additional victims were identified during the investigation and additional charges have been filed on Smith also for Willful Injury (D Felony) and Assault Causing Serious Injury (Serious Misdemeanor) connected to the additional victims.

On January 26, Smith entered into a plea agreement, which court records do not elaborate upon, except to say he has entered an Alford plea to willful injury causing bodily injury, criminal mischief in the second degree and assault causing bodily injury. He will be sentenced on March 9.  An Alford plea is when a defendant enters a plea of guilty without making an admission of guilt; meaning, the prosecution likely has enough evidence to convict.

Smith was also accused by Mason City police of willful injury causing serious injury during an incident in June of 2015. That charge was dismissed.
