The simple medical truth is that pork is unhealthy. 20,000 slaughtered hogs per day constitutes as massive murder. The act of murder is problematic. The hog facility should be rejected firstly because pork is no longer an item on the dinner plate, and secondly because the air and water quality matter to Iowans.
I (peter lagios) need rules to be clearly defined, logical and consistent.
Rule 1 : Leave – never come back.

Mason City used to be a magnet for immigrants from sugar beet processing. Many Latino names survive although the migrant field workers and permanent plant workers are gone. People have apparently forgotten their contributions to the community.
We have seen similar comments made when meatpacking plants have been proposed in other rural communities, such as Spencer and Iowa Falls. Residents told their councilors in each of their communities that they liked their communities white, and that they did not want to become “like Storm Lake.”
Those other places, including Mason City, are shrinking in population and future prospects.
It is silly for the state and local governments to throw money at a slaughterhouse that would locate here, anyway, because of our corn and soybeans. It is wrong to oppose its location over “cultural clashes.” That simply has not been the experience in Storm Lake.
The community is growing, and food processing gives people a foot on the first rung of the ladder to American success. Storm Lake will be a far stronger community in future generations than those who shut out people who do not look like them over base misperceptions.
As I have reported before I am at work right now with other permanent workers. Been here for 25 plus years full time. You are correct during sugar production, pretty much part time job for 85% of labor force. 3 to 4 month processing followed by 8 month lay off.Migrant workers much the same,field work lasted about 3 to 4 months.
An excerpt from a Des Moines register article on the Iowa Meat packing Industry that I found this very interesting. What are your thoughts?

Industrial agriculture managed to convince the Iowa Economic Development Authority and the North Iowa Corridor to buy into a project like this, when the research shows that they actually create economic destruction in the long run and not economic growth. Industrial agriculture looks for communities that are struggling and have naive or weak political leadership, and they promise the world to them. Both Republican and Democrat elites benefit from these operations in different ways, but the vast majority of middle- and working-class folks in small towns are left dealing with all the negative long-term consequences.”

As a City Coucilman with intimate knowledge of education I would like to address a couple of concerns regarding the impact of the Prestage plant on the schools. First, we all know for over 20 years our school district has been losing students. With that has come many many hard and difficult cuts. A lot of great teachers have had to leave because of these cuts and many chose to leave to go to the Des Moines area. However, any teacher knows the following, or should, with every new student, the district receives over $6,000 per pupil. If 10 new students come to our district, that could acutally pay for one new teacher.
This company also, when they pay their first round of taxes (even at 50% rebate) will be the highest tax payer in cerro Gordo County. The schools will receive over $600,000 from Prestage. That is the equivalent of 10.5 new teachers. When in 10 years, the agreement is up, they will be paying over 1.2 million dollars to the school district.
Will these kids need more resources then the average student. Probably so, but I also know some of the most rewarding moments as a teacher is working with the less fortunate children. Our job, is like doctors, we serve who ever walks through the door to the best of our ability. Our job is to educate any and all students regardless of background, race, creed, religion, faith, ability or talents. This is the unofficial oath I took on when I became a teacher.

If the people don’t want this plant then it should be told to move on plain and simple. The people already living here should make the choice and what a lot of us are hearing from other communities with plants like this it doesn’t sound a like a great idea. Also with your numbers in regards to additional students you didn’t figure in insurance cost so 10 students would not in all likelihood add up to one new teacher. Also any new teachers would be assisting children that chances are do not speak English as a first language so our children will not see any increased instruction and we are being asked to give this plant tax breaks and other incentives. Makes no sense.
It is only a few of you snobs who are against the working man having decent jobs that are against it. The rest of us non-country clubbers are for it. Smell the money fools.
Anyone who walks in the door? Has anyone actually GOOGLED Ron Prestage, Camden, SC to see what comes up? The Washington post article about him getting arrested for trying to bring a loaded pistol into the Capitol Building in Washington, DC? So now, in the interest of growing, the city council is making deals with felons? There is also an article where in North Carolina, despite Prestage’s bad reputation, a college took their $10 million dollar gift for a new building. If they have 10 million to give away, they don’t need our tax dollars. Why should we pay more taxes just so they have more money to give away?
First of all, many of these employees will drive in from other communities, like Hampton.
Second of all, if you think the schools will hire more teachers think again. They will spend the money on increasing current administrator and teacher salaries before they ever consider hiring more teachers.

I live in the area. I have few friends and the family I do have, I am not close with. I have never met my real father, and my mom was borderline abusive growing up.
I still live with my mom (i know wtf right?) but I am planning on jumping in my car over the summer and driving out west. Maybe Colorado or Arizona. Not telling anyone and starting a new life.
Is there any advice anyone can offer.? Has anyone done this before? Thought about doing it? Honestly any input you have is greatly appreciated… thanks

Just watched your rambling facebook video about how the meanies here are being mean to you.
Only the self-centered and self-absorbed develop these kinds of problems, and then dwell on them incessantly. I suggest getting a life, and getting out of the house once in awhile. Get some goals that don’t involve solely just making yourself useful to amoral, undependable , and utterly valueless strangers, like corporate bureaucracies, religious cults, and bizarre ideologies that have no redeeming purpose and do nothing but focus on marginalizing human nature and humanity in general.
Do some volunteer work and avoid the grandiose bullshit, like philosophy and other pseudo-intellectual pursuits until you can put them in some kind of relation and proportion to real life. Until then, you haven’t the first clue of what is really important and what isn’t.
One of my friends recently confided in me that he was close to suicide when he was in his teens because he had bad acne. I never knew that it affected him so bad, I guess he overcompensated by pretending to be overly confident, but I never thought he was bad looking.
Point is, people are often judge themselves way worse than they judge others. Like, whenever I look at a photo, I never really pay attention to anyone in it and wouldn’t notice if anyone looks odd or weird. when I look at a photo of myself, I nitpick and find a thousand flaws that no other person would ever find if they were to look at it. In short, you’re probably much better looking than you let yourself believe, especially if you’re into fitness.
That being said, if you’re happy with mediocrity then there’s no need to change it. You’re truly blessed if that’s the case because it isn’t difficult to maintain. But I’d just say don’t let fear hold you back. Life is about taking risks and good things very rarely come to those who wait. Take a chance and even if you fail, you’ll learn from it and life will go on as it always has.

I do not personally believe in pedophilia nor bestiality, but for legal arguments I don’t see how a government could prosecute someone for engaging in sex with a dog, if that dog begins humping on their leg. I would argue the act of the dog humping on your leg constitutes “implied consent”. In terms of children, I don’t believe implicit nor explicit consent can be given UNLESS the child was of the maturity for the capability of mentally understanding their actions. Herein a double standard exists. On one hand, the Courts sentence children to Life in Prison for murder as young as 14 years of age because they argue the child had the mental capacity to understand what they were doing was wrong. I would argue then that children of the same age should be able to mentally choose sex with an adult without the adult facing criminal charges. I’m not saying children or adults should be doing this…I’m saying that the double standards must be addressed. Pedophilia with young children is wrong at any level. But in reproductively capable and mentally cognizant teens…NO, the adult should not face a lifetime of pedophilia blacklisting.

I heard something interesting from someone that lives in Rockford about the scandal that was made public on April 6th. I’m curious to know the truth, as I haven’t seen/heard any thing from the victim? and the discrimination charge that she said she would check into. I was in the states for work reasons, was there a couple of months.
Love it there, everyone did seem very friendly, wouldn’t say too friendly, just really nice.
Everything is bigger, the thing I noticed most was the roads, they are just so much nicer to drive on. Driving in England sucks, it’s so overcrowded here, can’t go anywhere without sitting in traffic, and for the most part our roads are shit.
A few places I went to had free soda. In places like McDonalds, and other fast food places they just give you a big cup, you can fill it up yourself as much as you want.
Probably my favourite thing about America though is the right to bear arms and defend yourself. Although, obviously I didn’t get to enjoy that freedom when I was there, but I did visit a couple of shooting ranges.
I’d like to move to the states permanently, but emigrating there is so difficult.

I used to do tv repair and satellite installs, I cannot count how many times i went to a house just filled with Hispanics. The main reason I can tell that he was never in my unit, every body that i served with knows that the first 6 years, i was on the road for the state on an average of 3 weeks a month. I hadn’t seen or read that article, but it doesn’t surprise me. Our government has many skeletons in it’s closets. I just found out last fall that I was exposed to agent orange while I was in Korea. We try and do our duty and serve our country, but then get no help after we find out that we were lab rats.
I think what he meant by that remark was not that children SHOULD be completely dependant on their parents forever but that parents have a responsibility to ensure that children develop so that they can cope with the world and that they should help them throughout their entire life when necessary.
