Gunman shoots and kills 9 people on Oregon college campus

9-mm-gun-01ROSEBURG, OREGON – Nine people were killed by a lone gunman on an Oregon community college campus Thursday morning.

According to the Douglass county sheriff’s office, on October 1, 2015 at approximately 10:38 AM, Douglas County Emergency Communications received a report of an active shooter in a classroom on the campus of Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Oregon. Law enforcement officers from all parts of Douglas County responded to the scene. Responding officers encountered the suspect and exchanged gunfire.

The male shooter – identified as Chris Harper-Mercer – also died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. It was said he questioned his victims on their religious beliefs as he opened fire, armed with several weapons.

Law enforcement officers swept the campus for additional threats and determined that the scene was secure. There were multiple injuries to go along with the fatalities.

The sheriff’s office activated the Douglas County Major Crimes Team and have received law enforcement assistance from other jurisdictions all over the state. This is an active and ongoing investigation.

UCC Students and staff were bussed to the Douglas County Fairgrounds. The Red Cross assisted in reunited those people with family members.

As reported by CNN, the nine victims ranged in age from 18 to 67, Douglas County Sheriff John Hanlin said. Those killed are Lucero Alcaraz, 19; Treven Taylor Anspach, 20; Rebecka Ann Carnes, 18; Quinn Glen Cooper, 18; Kim Saltmarsh Dietz, 59; Lucas Eibel, 18; Jason Dale Johnson, 34; Lawrence Levine, 67; and Sarena Dawn Moore, 44.
