Iowa man refuses to drop hand gun, is shot dead by deputy

9-mm-gun-01WASHINGTON COUNTY, IOWA – On Saturday, September 12, 2015, the Washington County Sheriff’s Office received a call regarding a subject, later identified as Martin Francis Hammen, 39, as being suicidal. At approximately 9:00 PM, deputies went to Hammen’s residence, located at 1149 Hwy 22 in Wellman, Iowa, and attempted to locate Hammen, but were unsuccessful.

On Sunday, September 13, 2015, at approximately 1:14 AM, deputies returned to 1149 Hwy 22 for a report of a residence fire. Upon arrival, they found the residence and structures on the curtilage engulfed in flames. A white male was observed running north from the curtilage crossing Hwy 22. Soon afterwards, Hammen walked out from a tree line carrying a handgun and propane torch.

Hammen was ordered to drop the handgun, but failed to comply with the deputies orders. One deputy fired his service rifle, striking Hammen in the upper torso. Hammen was pronounced dead at the scene. No deputies were injured in the incident.

The Iowa Department of Public Safety’s (DPS) Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) is investigating this incident with assistance from the Washington County Attorney’s Office, Iowa Attorney General’s Office, Iowa Department of Public Safety’s (DPS) State Fire Marshal Division (SFM), Washington Police Department, Keota Police Department and the Wellman Volunteer Fire Department.
