MASON CITY – A local organizer is planning a cross-town walk in Mason City on National Peace Day to promote peace and “reverse horrible things” that she says are happening here.

“Based on recent events in our community, the rise on violence have become (at an) all time high. This needs to stop!” says event organizer Deoshea Leaman. She created an “event” using social media and has invited nearly 2,000 people to participate on Monday, September 21 at 6 PM in what she calls the “Choose Peace, Stop Violence Community Walk”. The event is planned to start “at Sears parking lot and end at baseball diamonds at north end of town”.

As of Monday morning, 127 people have committed to attend, with several dozen saying “maybe”.

In further explaining the need for this community peace walk, Ms. Leaman said “We as a community need to come together and bring peace! In regards to these tragic events, we have decided to do a peaceful get together. A walk to end violence, a walk to start peace. We need to start a trend to reverse these horrible things happening. There are children in this community! They are watching and learning. This isn’t the way they should grow up. We all have a past we may or may not regret. But things shouldn’t be like this!! In memory to all we have lost, this walk is a reminder that no matter what we can lose someone in matter of seconds. Let’s come together and being peace! It starts with you!”

Ms. Leaman, who said “children need role models”,  suggested that those who might attend make t-shirts that say “stop the violence”.  She was also a co-founder of a previous group called “Fed Up North Iowa” that attempted to organize to bring awareness and promote peace.  That effort was met with enthusiasm from some and skepticism by others.

Mason City police did not immediately respond to questions from NIT as to whether they were aware of the peace walk and if they would help organizers have a safe path to the North End.

There is a Facebook page set for the event, located here:

Why don’t you organize a neighborhood watch. Hang out uptown at night at the known problem spots… like Eleven, all along North Federal from the mall all the way to the Holcim concrete bridge, central Kum & Go and the flee bag motel right behind it. Catch the problem people doing the things they do, turn them in for their crimes. Walking across town isn’t going to accomplish anything.

Seriously, it’s great that you want to do something, but having a couple dozen people take a walk isn’t going to do it. All of the people that are creating the problem will only be laughing at you because they know you’re wasting your time.

Everyone needs to start policing themselves and their…

Impressive suggestion!

Like this is going to do a lot of “good” to stop anything that is happening here. How about start with these few things, Stop having babies to men you are not married to and collect welfare. Have sit down dinners with your children and talk to them about the events of the day. (Husband and wife and kids, or single parents with kids.) Stay away from the drug dealers, Stay away from imports from Chicago. (refer back to drug dealers.)

And my mother always said, nothing good ever happens after 10:00 at night. It does ring true and is pretty simple.

So this is the same girl who started “fed up” before having police called on her for threatening somebody with a knife. Then did fund raisers and disappeared with the money right?

Lol sounds like it. How long until SEARS tells all these people to get off their property, like they usually do?

I don’t ever recall her threatening anyone with a knife?? Where do you have it that this happen? Or are you going off of he say she say? And she never received any money. Not a dime. Maybe the two other woman that took over did, but I know she didn. But see the difference is, at least she is about the only person who is even trying to make a difference!! I don’t see anyone else going out of there way to do something like this!! I don’t know why you people have to always bring up some negative things to make yourself feel some type of way. Give the girl props! She has had a very rough past 5 years losing 3 family members back to back. No that is no excuse for anything she has done. But…

Not sure about the knife but basically started some bogus group, had people buy a ton of shirts, then it went off the radar. The whole things a joke and hard to take seriously.
