CLEAR LAKE – The Mason City Mohawks earned a tough victory over their rivals to the west, beating the Clear Lake Lions 9-7 Friday night at Lions Field.
It was a cool, rainy night, and there wasn’t much offense. Mason City led 7-0 before an interception by the Clear Lake defense opened the door to the tying touchdown, sending the game into halftime tied at 7 apiece.
In the second half, both defenses were stout. Mason City forced a safety early on and that was the difference in the game.
Clear had a shot, getting the ball back with 52 seconds left, but the Mohawks never let them get close to the end zone.
Mason City is now 1-0, while Clear Lake is 0-1.
