Iowa City Considering Ban on E-Cigs in Public Places

Submitted to NIT:

Ever since the popularity of electronic cigarettes has started to grow, people have been trying to get governments to ban them based on all different types of speculation that surrounds them. People are afraid of such things as the smoke they produce being as addictive and harmful as that which is produced by cigarettes. However, there is only one problem with that thinking and that is e-cigarettes produce vapor not smoke and all the ingredients used in them have never been found to be harmful to people. As is the case with many things, someone in the political spotlight in Iowa City is trying to make a name for themselves so they are taking the initiative to ban the use of e-cigs there.

Apparently in Iowa City, vaping (the act of using electronic cigarettes) has become extremely popular and some citizens are concerned about it becoming a health issue and a public nuisance to others. These same citizens are pushing to have it banned from being done in public places much the same way cigarette smoking is handled in the city. It appears that some of the local politicians have gotten on board too and are supporting drawing up some sort of legislation to support banning the public use of e-cigarette products.

What may seem to be a good idea on the surface is more likely a case of some severely misinformed individuals that are hurting the rights of others to partake in a harmless pastime that they very much enjoy. Smokeless cigarettes tend to get a very bad reputation for no reason.

While it is commendable that a group of concerned citizens take a stand on what they feel is protecting their fellow residents of the city; a closer look at the realities of ‘vaping’ would probably considerably lessen their fears and anxieties about electronic cigarette use.

Those who know what e-cig use is all about understand that the vapor (not smoke) that an e-cig user inhales and exhales is vastly different than cigarette smoke. The vapor is produced by slightly heating an e-liquid as it passes over an electronic coil; this vapor contains no known harmful ingredients unless the user of the device chooses to put them in there. Most of the ingredients are such things as vegetable oil, natural flavorings and propylene glycol (approved by the FDA and found in many foods that are eaten harmlessly every day). This is drastically different than cigarette smoke which has large amounts of lung coating tar and several other known carcinogens present in it.

There are no flame or burning embers involved with e-cigarette use either, the vapor that is produced is taken into the user’s lungs at a much cooler temperature than cigarette smoke is.

It is probably best for the concerned citizens and politicians to let things play out as they are and wait until more results come out from testing and concrete proof is established that e-cigs are indeed bad for people health wise… which is unlikely to happen.
