CHARLES CITY – A man who police say tried to run over a cop with a van will stand trial in July.
Lavonte Lashon Starr, age 26, will stand trial on July 30 on charges of first degree criminal mischief (a felony), assault on a peace officer, first offense drunk driving, interference with official acts, disorderly conduct, no headlights, no driver’s license, driving on the wrong side of the road and no seat belt. The charges stem from an incident on April 17, when just before midnight, Charles City police were called to respond to an assault in progress at an apartment complex in the 600 block of 11th Street. Upon arrival, Starr attempted to flee in a van. Police said he drove off the street towards a police officer and into a grass lot, striking a fence. He was then subdued and taken to the county jail.
Starr was later released from jail, opening his trial.
