WATERLOO – Already struggling to deal with the violence in that community, Waterloo police were called to deal with a fatal shooting Friday.
The victim from the Friday May 15, 2015, shooting in Waterloo has been identified as Jykeria Japree Coffer, 15 years of age, who reportedly did not survive.
That night, at approximately 6:02 PM, officers with the Waterloo Police Department were dispatched to 908 Broadway Street on a report of a subject that had been shot at that location. On arrival of police and medics, the victim was transported to Allen Hospital where she was later pronounced dead.
At this time, it is believed that the victim sustained her injuries during an incident that occurred inside of the residence involving another teenager.
According to published reports, Diyrun Dapree Coffer, age 14, has been arrested in connection to this shooting death. He is the younger brother of Jykeria Japree Coffer. Waterloo Police Chief Dan Trelka told KCRG TV that Diyrun Coffer allegedly stole the handgun used in the incident earlier on Friday and that he mishandled the weapon, causing an accidental shot that struck Jykeria in the chest. Diyrun reportedly faces one count of involuntary manslaughter.
This incident remains under investigation.
